About Root Shoot Spirits:
Root Shoot Spirits is whiskey with roots, literally. The Olanders are a fifth-generation family farm in Loveland, Colorado, where farming comes first and whiskey making second. Every bottle begins in their own regenerative fields, where soil health and sustainability aren’t trends, they’re legacy. Their grain-to-glass approach means 100% of the specialty malts are grown, harvested, and malted by the family before ever touching a still. The result? True Colorado character in every sip - handcrafted American single malt built from the ground up.
When faced with a grain surplus in the early 2020s, the Olanders saw opportunity instead of waste. They partnered with Alastair Brogan of Boulder Spirits, firing up his Forsyths copper pot still with Root Shoot malt and pristine Colorado water. What started as excess grain became something exceptional. This isn’t just whiskey. It’s land stewardship, generational grit, and proof that when you take care of the soil, the soil takes care of you.
The Slicker Take:
This is Root Shoot’s first-ever 5-year release, and while the brand is beginning to expand, it’s still only available in a handful of states. So getting our hands on a single barrel? That felt big. We sourced this barrel as a special collaboration and bottled the remainder through Mile High Spirits, because when something is this good, you share it. Root Shoot isn’t just making whiskey; they’re changing the conversation. Regenerative farming. Grain-to-glass integrity. And this American Single Malt? It’s the kind that makes bourbon loyalists raise an eyebrow then ask for another pour. After taking home Gold at the London Spirits Competition and being named American Single Malt of the Year in 2025, they didn’t need to prove anything but they did anyway. I first tried their inaugural barrel pick in The Vault at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. Hooked. Immediately. I knew right then I had to secure a single barrel from these folks. I hope you enjoy our very first American Single Malt Single Barrel pick.
